Jump Starting Your Car

Jump starting your car or reviving a dead battery is not that hard to do. Here are some steps to help you do the job properly and safely:

First, you need to find a volunteer. Your car won't start without someone's permission to use his or her car’s battery. You need a cable connectors or jumper cables. Make sure your cable connectors are not damaged. Keep your cables clean and dry to prevent corrosion from becoming a high-resistance factor. Make sure that it is part of your auto’s emergency kit. If possible, wear safety gloves and glass when checking the battery. Don't also smoke while jump starting your car. Batteries can release explosive and flammable gases.

When checking the battery, never jump start frozen battery for it may explode. If your battery has removable vent caps, you can look inside to see if the liquid is frozen. Check if the connector is damage. If any corrosion is present, scrape this off.

Make sure the car is parked near the other car. Switch off the power of both cars and set the brakes. Then, clamp the jumper and locate the batteries’ terminals. Positive charges will be marked with a + and negative with a - . This is standard in the automotive industry. Clamp one cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery and connect it to the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal of the good battery. Make sure you do not allow the metal clamps of the red and black cables to touch each other.

Afterwards, clamp the black cable to the negative terminal on the car with the live battery. Connect the other end of the negative cable to metal on the engine block on the car with the dead battery.

Now attempt to start the car. Stand back and start the car with the live battery. Wait until the dead battery recharge slightly. It will charge more when the dead car starts. When both engines are running, you can now remove the cables. Remove it in reverse order, first taking off the black grounding connection on the body of the car and then the other end of the black cable, and finally the red cable. Do not shut down the engine to the car, let the car run to make sure the battery has a full charge.

To make sure that your auto won't stop or lose its battery charge again, opt for the repair services of the nearest auto-mechanic shop in your area.
